Tying with pole

Put both limbs either side of the pole and take the wraps round pole and body together, placed where the tie cannot ride up or down.

How it is done

A pole, a post or a closed door edge anchors by friction and geometry rather than by a fitting — so the tie is made round the pole and the body as one bundle, and it has to sit where it cannot slide: above a widening, below a fitting, or held in place by a second wrap at a different height. Somebody tied to a smooth pole with a single band ends up sitting on the floor.

What goes wrong with this one

Push the pole hard yourself first — a free-standing rail, a coat stand or a curtain pole is furniture, not an anchor.
