Kinds of play

A tour of what people actually do, why they do it, and how to try each one at the smallest possible scale. Reading about something is not agreeing to it — in the planner this is the same list you can switch off, one tag at a time.

The number on each row is how many different things in the planner carry that tag. Switch the tag off and every one of them disappears, in scenes, games and chat alike.

• Impact play Strikes with a hand or a toy, counted, on an agreed part of the body. 34
• Restraint Ties, cuffs, or holds that keep a body from moving freely. 101
• Blindfolds, sensory deprivation Sight, hearing, or both taken away with a covering, plugs, or a hood. 10
• Temperature play Heat or cold on the skin — wax, ice, glass, or a switch between them. 15
• Held positions Being told to hold a posture, often on a clock, without necessarily being tied. 84
• Being left waiting Left in place, in a corner, or in a tie, with time as the point. 11
• Taking orders Spoken commands, protocol, drills, or a quiz — doing what was asked. 68
• Clamps, wax, pinching Clamps, pinching, a pinwheel, or similar small, local pain — not a counted strike. 73
• Chastity, denial A cage, belt, or ring that keeps genitals from being used, often with the key out of reach. 15
